Building resilience: A new data-driven solution for disaster risk reduction (DRR)

Organisation: Open Contracting Partnership, CivicDataLab, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation. Location: Online | 3pm London, 7:30pm New Delhi, 9pm Bangkok, 10pm Manila

Join us for the global launch of our Intelligent Data Solution for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDS-DRR). The platform was developed by CivicDataLab and Open Contracting Partnership, with the support of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation.

Intense climate-related disasters have been on the rise worldwide. Floods are the most frequent of natural disasters, causing widespread devastation, loss of life and livelihoods as well as property damage and critical infrastructure failures. Of the 1.47 billion people directly exposed to the risk of intense flooding, over a third of them are poor and 132 million live in extreme poverty. The poorest of the poor suffer the most from disasters; more likely to live in hazard-exposed areas and less able to invest in risk-reducing measures, extreme weather events such as floods drive them even further into poverty.

Building resilience is hard. Disaster risk reduction involves multiple different actors making multiple complex decisions across multiple different stages of crisis management. Often, information is fragmented and siloed, scattered across different agencies, in various different systems, locations and formats. This makes it difficult for decision-makers to make joined-up, data-informed decisions that accurately reflect or prioritize the most urgent needs.

This is why we developed a sophisticated data model that joins up complex datasets spanning flood hazard, exposure, vulnerability and government contracts, to make it easier for decision-makers to identify and prioritize the right investments that better serve the most vulnerable communities at risk of floods.

In this webinar, we will showcase our data model and how it is helping to overcome DRR planning and procurement challenges in Assam, India. We will also discuss the potential for scaling and replication, including to other Indian states such as Himachal Pradesh and Odisha, as well as to other countries around the globe.
